Papua New Guinea’s NRL Ambition Gains Momentum with Penrith Panthers’ Backing
Prime Minister James Marape has expressed his gratitude for the Penrith Panthers’ endorsement of Papua New Guinea’s bid to join the National Rugby League (NRL) by 2028. The historic initiative, announced by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in December 2023, aims to strengthen bilateral ties between PNG and Australia through sports, tourism, and business collaborations.
The Penrith Panthers, one of the NRL’s most successful clubs, demonstrated their support for the deal during a visit to PNG this week by their CEO, Matthew Cameron. The visit culminated in a special event at the Stanley Hotel, where Prime Minister Marape acknowledged the Panthers’ commitment to PNG’s NRL aspirations.
“The presence of the Penrith Panthers and their endorsement of PNG’s NRL journey is deeply meaningful to our nation,” said Marape. “As the current top club in the NRL, their support carries significant weight. Rugby League is not just a sport; it is a unifying force that transcends borders, and this partnership is a testament to its growing global appeal.”
Marape highlighted the broader significance of PNG’s inclusion in the NRL, emphasizing its potential to foster national pride and strengthen international relationships. “For Papua New Guinea, joining the NRL is about more than sport—it is about nation-building and deepening our connections with Australia and the world,” he said.
The Prime Minister also reflected on the historical ties between PNG and Australia, noting that Australia’s support for PNG’s independence in 1975 laid the foundation for a lasting partnership. He drew parallels to the Penrith Panthers’ own history, pointing out that the club was only 19 years old when PNG gained independence and will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2026.
“The Penrith Panthers have a strong fan base here in Papua New Guinea,” Marape added. “As we prepare to join the NRL in 2028, we look forward to seeing even more support for your club from our people and beyond. Your backing is invaluable, and we wish you continued success.”
The NRL deal is expected to bring significant economic and social benefits to PNG, including increased sports tourism and enhanced cultural exchanges. With rugby league’s popularity expanding beyond traditional strongholds in Australia, the Pacific, and the UK, Marape envisions the sport gaining traction in new markets, including the United States and Asia.
As PNG gears up to launch its NRL team in Port Moresby by 2028, the support of established clubs like the Penrith Panthers marks a pivotal step in realizing this ambitious goal. The collaboration underscores the transformative power of sport in uniting nations and creating opportunities for growth and development.
