PNG Defence Minister Daki to address challenges faced by agencies

 Papua New Guinea Defence Minister Win Bakri Daki says he will do what he can to address challenges faced by agencies under the ministry over the next two months.

He said this after receiving reports from agencies such as the National Disasters Services, PNG Fire Services, PNG Fire Services, National Volunteer Services, Department of Defence and the Papua New Guinea Defence Force in Port Moresby on Monday.

National Disasters Centre Assistant Director Andrew Oaego said the K100 000 annual funding for provincial disaster centres was not enough to cater for all expenses.

He said the centers have been left to coordinate and manage disasters with less man power and funding over the past 37 years.

Disasters cannot manage their operations and man power capacity at the provincial level due to less funding, he said.

He said there was only funding available for administration and not for operations.

The annual budget is K1.5 million to K2.5 million and this can cater only for the administration costs and not operational costs, he said.
